Irish Soda Bread

We are so lucky to have an authentic recipe shared with us by our contributor Colleen.  Her Grandma Dailey hand wrote the original recipe in County Kerry, Ireland. Enjoy!

Irish Soda Bread Recipe


4 cups of flour

1 level teaspoon of salt

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

Pinch of cream of tartar

1/4 cup sugar

1/4 cup butter

1 1/2 – 2 cups buttermilk

1 cup raisins or currants

1 Tablespoon caraway seed


1. Sift together the flour, salt, baking soda, cream of tartar and sugar

2. Cut in the butter

3. Fold in buttermilk, raisins/currants, caraway seeds

4. Gently knead for 1 minute or until a ball forms

5. Place ball in a buttered cake pan, flatten slightly, cut a fairly deep cross in the top to mark the farls (quarters).

6. Bake at 350 degrees for 50-60 minutes
