Let it Go

When I decided to take the plunge and surprise my husband with a boudoir shoot for his 40th birthday, I was a little nervous and wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I have always been pretty comfortable in my own skin, but I’m not always good with liking myself just the way I am–post babies, especially. Luckily for me, Amanda at JaneCane Photography fit me into her schedule right away so I didn’t have too much time to pick myself apart or obsess over what I was going to wear. We emailed back and forth a bit beforehand and she gave me a Pinterest link for some examples of boudoir-style outfits. I wanted to be true to my personal style and keep it simple. I thought about what I love about my body instead of what I dislike and tried to keep the focus on that.

My mom always says, “Look good, feel good!”

When I arrived at the JaneCane studio, I was greeted with a warm hug and introduced to the makeup artist. I sat down with a mimosa as the makeup artist got to work doing a natural, but sexy makeup application; I even got air brush and lashes! I am super picky and I loved, loved, loved how I looked. I chose to do my own hair but that service is also included in the boudoir session if you prefer having a pro tend to it. Once the room was warmed and ready, and after I showed Amanda my outfit selection, it was showtime.

It’s OK to Laugh

If you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Amanda, you must know that she is the kind of person you want to be around. She is bubbly, has a great laugh, is extremely down to earth, and she put me at ease right away. We definitely had the giggles a few times while  figuring out poses and making sure I didn’t have a stray body part out of place. She was so great at explaining how I should sit, or position my hands. I wasn’t sure how the posing would go because I’m more mom than model, but she was a total pro and took all the guesswork out. AND she made me feel like a total babe. As a mom, it’s weird to have so much attention on yourself, but it can also be really nice if you can try to relax and enjoy it.

Why You Should Schedule a Boudoir Shoot

You’ve had babies! Your body is incredible! Your partner will FLIP OUT!

But really, if this is something you would consider doing, you should do it, and don’t wait to be the perfect version of yourself because you already are. Amanda will capture your best features in a timeless and beautiful way. You can wear as much or as little as you feel comfortable with. Even though it took a little bravery to do it, I feel a lot of power and confidence when I look at my boudoir photos from JaneCane Photography. I know I’ll appreciate the photos as I grow old and be proud that I took a chance and did it.

I'm Kati Annis and I moved to Duluth ten years ago, after graduating from the Aveda Institute of Cosmetology in Minneapolis. Originally from Bemidji, I always loved visiting Duluth and I knew I wanted to end up here. I met my husband Brian at the first salon I worked at while I was cutting his son Caleb's hair. Brian and I have been married for nine years, and we now have a family of five, going on six! Caleb is a freshman at the University of Sioux Falls where he is playing football and learning a lot.I have two daughters, Grace and Elin who both attend Many Rivers Montessori and both love dancing with the Minnesota Ballet. I am a stay at home mom with another baby on the way! Most of my favorite hobbies are not outdoorsy ones, but we all can't be Annie Oakley. I'm so excited to share my mommy-wife-life perspective with this great community of women.

  1. Wow, what a beautiful gift and idea! Especially liking ourselves just as we are. This moment is all there is and is as good as it needs to be. I like the idea of looking back one day too. To appreciate and embrace our beauty as it is right now!!
